EFG London Jazz Festival
Presented by Serious, International Anthem, and Total Refreshment Centre
The EFG London Jazz Festival brings together a double headliner featuring two of the most seminal artists to emerge from the thriving jazz scenes in Chicago and London in recent years.
Drummer and beat scientist Makaya McCraven, one of the key new figures in the Chicago jazz scene, whose genre-bending compositions also draw from his collaborations with hip-hop, African dance, indie rock, and Hungarian folk artists. His performance will come on the back of the release of his latest album Universal Beings, which comes out later this year via International Anthem.
Saxophonist Nubya Garcia, undoubtedly one of the leading forces in the new wave of British afro-tinged jazz, having taken the world by storm this year with her When We Are EP and appearances at Dimensions, Field Day, Winter Jazzfest amongst other festivals.
This marks the two artists’ only headline shows in London this side of 2018, and they will also be joined by some very special guest artists TBA for a series of one-off collaborations after their own sets.
Following on from 2017’s Chicago X London weekender in Total Refreshment Centre, this year’s event takes the concept to the next level in the incredible new Hackney Arts Centre venue, and also serves to celebrate the physical release of Where We Come From – the Chicago X London Mixtape featuring Makaya McCraven and a who’s who of London’s jazz scene on International Anthem.
We believe that 2018 will be looked back on as a year when a new generation of jazz artists like Makaya and Nubya crossed a threshold into becoming some of the most important musicians of their generation. Chicago X London brings them and more under one roof.
We look forward to sharing more details and announcements for this very special show in the coming months…
