Plaid sit right at the very heart of global electronica. In fact there’s a very real sense in which Ed Handley and Andy Turner are the perfect encapsulation of what the electronic music of their generation was all about. As Plaid and as two-thirds of The Black Dog, they were central to the Artificial Intelligence electronic music movement of the early-mid 1990s, alongside their Warp labelmates Autechre, Aphex Twin, B12, and allies like Richie Hawtin, Speedy J, Kenny Larkin. They brought new rhythmic variation, emotive melody, and sensual textures to the leftfield, creating a warm and welcoming counterpart to the white heat of the rave explosion.
The duo have just announced Polymer, which Bleep describes as “a baker’s dozen of tunes that finds the duo of Ed Handley and Andy Turner showing off all of their tricks. Crafted under the manifesto ‘Polyphony, Pollution and Politics’, Polymer manages to synthesise this trio of concerns into a set of stirring electronic compositions.”
Plaid are bringing their brand new A/V show to our theatre. Expect a spellbinding show from a truly groundbreaking act.
