The Psychedelic Society is honoured to host a conversation between three of the UK's leading thinkers on psychedelics and spirituality: Rupert Sheldrake, Robin Carhart-Harris and Stephen Reid. Expect a free-flowing, generative dialogue on topics likely to include:

  • Modes of use of psychedelics: medical, therapeutic, spiritual, recreational

  • Theories of consciousness and the interpretation of the mystical/spiritual type experience

  • Personal, social and political consequences of spiritual experience

  • The metamodern view of science

  • Ecological crisis and the role of plant psychedelics

  • Antirivalry, antifragility and abundance


Rupert Sheldrake, PhD, is a biologist and author of more than 85 scientific papers and 9 books, including A New Science of Life: The Hypothesis of Morphic Resonance, The Science Delusion, The Sense of Being Stared At, Science and Spiritual Practices and Ways to Go Beyond And Why They Work. He is currently a Fellow of the Institute of Noetic Sciences in California, Schumacher College in Totnes and the Temenos Academy of Integral Studies in London. Previously, he obtained an MA in Natural Sciences and a PhD in Biochemistry from Cambridge, studied philosophy and history of science at Harvard, and was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge where he was Director of Studies in biochemistry and cell biology, a Rosenheim Research Fellow of the Royal Society and Principal Plant Physiologist at the International Crops Research Institute in Hyderabad, India, where he helped develop new cropping systems now widely used by farmers.

Robin Carhart-Harris, PhD, is head of the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London and has an honorary position with the University of Oxford. At Imperial, Robin has designed and overseen brain imaging studies involving LSD, psilocybin, MDMA and DMT, plus a clinical trial of psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression, another trial comparing psilocybin with a common SSRI for major depressive disorder and another imaging study in healthy volunteers receiving a high-dose of psilocybin. Previously, Robin obtained a PhD in Psychopharmacology from the University of Bristol and an MA in Psychoanalysis from Brunel University.

Stephen Reid is a social entrepreneur, activist and public speaker. He is currently a co-director of the Psychedelic Society, which he founded in 2014 and has become one of the global leading providers of legal psychedelic retreats. Previously, he was the youngest ever board member of Greenpeace UK, co-founded the New Economics Foundation's New Economy Organisers Network and worked as a technology consultant for organisations including the Labour Party, the Green Party and 350.org. Stephen has an MPhys in Physics from the University of Oxford, where he specialised in quantum field theory, and an MRes in Complexity Sciences from the University of Bristol.
