ART MATTERS – Neil Gaiman, Chris Riddell, Lauren Laverne – Sold out! Join the Waiting list.

Join Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell at a one-off special event to celebrate the publication of ART MATTERS, as they talk with broadcaster and presenter Lauren Laverne about inspiration, creativity and the power of words and images.

This event is sold out, join the waiting list!

Neil Gaiman, Chris Riddell, Lauren Laverne

ART MATTERS is a creative call to arms from the mind of Neil Gaiman, combining his extraordinary words with deft and striking illustrations by Chris Riddell. Drawn together from speeches, poems and creative manifestos, it explores how reading, imagining and creating can change the world. Just like the book, this event will inspire people to seize the day in the name of art and will include live drawing by Chris.

The event will be held in association with the charity English PEN, who work to defend and promote freedom of expression and to remove barriers to literature. A large print taken from the book and signed by Neil and Chris will be auctioned on the night with the proceeds going to English PEN.

Tickets include a free copy of ART MATTERS for every ticket-holder signed by both Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell, which they will receive on the night.

‘For years now, Chris Riddell has taken my words from speeches or poems or articles, and illustrated them, in order to communicate things to the world with deftness and charm.’ Neil Gaiman

‘I love the way words and pictures work together on a page. I have also noticed that when wise words have visuals added to them they seem to travel further online like paper aeroplanes catching an updraft. Neil’s words are some of the wisest I’ve found and the response when I illustrate them and post online has been wonderful.’ Chris Riddell

Known by many as father of Ethio-jazz....

A photo of Mulatu Astatke

Mulatu Astatke (born 1943) is an Ethiopian musician and arranger best known as the father of Ethio-jazz. Born in the western Ethiopian city of Jimma, Mulatu trained in London, New York City, and Boston where he combined his jazz and Latin music interests with traditional Ethiopian music and became the first African student to enroll at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music from where he received an honourary degree in 2012.

Astatke led his band while playing vibraphone and conga drums—instruments that he introduced into Ethiopian popular music— other percussion instruments, keyboards and organ. His albums focus primarily on instrumental music, and Astatke appears on all three known albums of instrumentals that were released during Ethiopia’s Golden ’70s. He collaborated with many notable artists in both countries, arranging and playing on recordings by Mahmoud Ahmed, and appearing as a special guest with Duke Ellington during a tour of Ethiopia in 1973.

His Western audience expanded even further when the 2005 Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers featured seven of Astatke’s songs. Hip hop artists have also sampled Astatke’s songs extensively, for example in the works of Nas, Damian Marley, Kanye West, Cut Chemist, and Knaan. He toured with US band Either/ Orchestra in 2006 and in 2008 recorded an album with the Heliocentrics and completed a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship at Harvard University, where he worked on modernizations of traditional Ethiopian instruments and premiered a portion of a new opera, The Yared Opera.

Some of the worlds best beat makers in East London’s brand new music and arts venue...

A photo of MNDSGN

Talented LA beatmaker MNDSGN returns to London for a showcase of spectacular beats alongside Lapalux and CID RIM for one of the first shows at Dalston’s brand new 2,500 capacity space, EartH!

Ringo Ancheta AKA Mndsgn is an anomaly among hip-hop producers – not raised in the suburbs on a steady diet of video games and hip-hop, but in the forest like a beast. His parents were granted political asylum in the U.S. and settled in rural New Jersey, where Ancheta was raised on the outskirts of a commune without electricity. Inspired by a Nas lyric and with a nod to his father’s work in neuroscience he began beat-making as Mndsgn and moved to Los Angeles.

Joining MNDSGN will be Brainfeeder artist Stuart Howard AKA Lapalux who has made a name for himself by combining dark, twisted and sometimes wonky R&B beats with his natural talent for creating deep textural masterpieces.

A key founding member of Portico Quartet, Nick has toured the world picking up a wealth of international acclaim, including a Mercury Music Prize nomination for the Quartet’s debut album ‘Knee-deep in the North Sea’.

NickMulvey_1600x1068.jpg

Nick started out playing both piano and drums, but found his calling at 18, when he bought his first guitar from a family of guitar makers in Southern Spain. At 19 he studied music and art in Cuba. He then studied Ethnomusicology at SOAS, where he picked up the hang and stumbled across his Portico Quartet band mates. Their second album, ‘Isla’, cemented their international success and paved the way for a year of touring, clocking up around 150 shows across the globe in 2010.

Nick spent six amazing years working with friends, embracing and pushing a new musical instrument to the forefront of cutting edge music. Although he has loved every moment, he now feels that the time is right for him to return to the guitar and work on a solo project.

Nick is essentially a self-taught musician who has been fortunate enough to have worked with some amazing people who have influenced his work greatly. He is a musical innovator who is looking to combine and sit between genres. All his music is about the groove, and with his new material, there is no holding him back. Over the next couple of years, Nick will prove to become a staple of innovative music and is hoping to emulate the passion and success of predecessors such as Steve Reich, Paul Simon and Ali Farka Toure.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble bring heart-racing horns and raw Chicago energy to EartH.

Hyptonic Brass Ensemble, black and white photo

The spirit of south-side Chicago runs to the very core of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Vibrancy, energy and hustle coalesce with raw emotion and fearless expression to create an exhilarating and evocative sound like no other. Undoubtedly, the legacy of Chicago Jazz lives on through the the bouncing brass and heart-racing horns of this seven piece.

Fathered by Astral Jazz legend Phil Cohran, the seven blood-brothers that form the band earned their stripes in New York subway stations and smoky suburban Jazz bars. Today however, they have toured the world together, playing with everyone from Prince, Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Mick Jones (The Clash) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz).

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble’s unique sound was perhaps summed up best by Fader Magazine, who described it as: “A huge brass bridge of hypnotic polyphony connecting the cosmic jazz of Sun Ra’s Arkestra, with the urgency of hip-hop and the sweeping emotional scale of a Curtis Mayfield blaxploitation opus.”

Witness the coming together of their musical mastery and raw Chicago energy as the band takeover Hackney Arts Centre for one of their biggest headline shows to date!

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks

On ‘Middle America’, Malkmus’s wry wordplay and sunny twang create an ode to underdogs everywhere, with bittersweet words of encouragement for the ramshackle character on their receiving end. Only SM & the Jicks can craft this kind of brightly low-key anthem, a perfect three-minute-thirty-second country-speckled gem about life’s questions big (the inevitable passage of time; aging) and small (getting shitfaced; blushing the color of Robitussin).

George FitzGerald – Sold Out! Second Date on 26 October.

George FitzGerald returns with his second album, All That Must Be. A mesmeric and transportive collection of songs that he'll present at EartH in October.

This event is sold out! A second date has been added on 26 October:

Featuring collaborations with Lil Silva, Bonobo, and Tracey Thorn (Everything But The Girl), All That Must Be is a richly poignant record that plots a route through the mental and physical landscape of its creator over the course of 18 life-changing months, and in doing so illuminates a more universal set of themes.

It documents a time that saw FitzGerald leaving Berlin, his home for the past decade, and returning to London to begin a life with his newly-born daughter. After years as a DJ surrounded by the much-storied hedonism of the German capital, and with few responsibilities other than making his flights each weekend, FitzGerald’s life changed markedly. The result is a record that deals with processes of transition, acceptance and renewal, a backdrop that feels particularly pertinent in a time where young adulthood is elongated ever further and there seem to be fewer reasons to settle down.

New Zealand’s Marlon Williams has quite simply got one of the most extraordinary, effortlessly distinctive voices of his generation, and 30th November sees him return to London to join us here at EartH....

Marlon Williams posing

His sophomore album Make Way For Love released in February, explores new musical terrain and we see Williams revealing himself in an unprecedented way, in the wake of a fractured relationship with his long term girlfriend, artist Aldous Harding.

Williams and his band The Yarra Benders, embarked on a 67 date world tour at the beginning of this year to celebrate the record, playing sold out shows throughout the US, UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

If “breakup record” is a trope—and certainly it is—then Marlon Williams has done it proud. Like the best of the lot—Beck’s Sea Change, Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago, Phosphorescent’s harrowing Song For Zula and Joni Mitchell’s masterpiece Blue, Make Way For Love doesn’t shy away from heartbreak, but rather stares it in the face, and mines beauty from it. Delicate and bold, tender and searing, it’s a mightily personal new step.

Theatre
Long established pop composer, sound sculptress, soundtracker and singer, Jane Weaver, presents an evening of unique atmospheric audio/visual segments performing solo variations of songs from her critically acclaimed albums 'The Silver Globe' and 'Modern Kosmology’.

jane helmet flat better crop COMPLETE.jpg

An unshakable figure in the U.K’s experimental pop music landscape for over 3 decades, with eight full length albums to her name, Jane's self-propelled career has in recent years reached a critical zenith with unanimous praise spanning various multi-disciplinary fields, on a multitude of new global pastures.

Named after a standout track on her latest Modern Kosmology album, Loops In The Secret Society, as Jane's first solo tour in over five years, sees her continue to channel new depths of cosmic energy with a fragile web of melodic codes, vocal treatments, cyclic cinematic motifs and expanding drum drones via her assemblage of custom-built vinyl discs, unlikely instrumentation, tape loops and zoetropic imagery.

The Loops In The Secret Society tour, reveals another dimension to Jane Weaver's ever expanding oeuvre, further reinstating the artist as one of Europe's most inspiring, inceptive and independent female performers and one of the truly vital architects of progressive pop music and creative songwriting of this generation.

Colin Stetson

Colin Stetson

Theatre
With this, his first solo outing since 2013’s “To See More Light”, Colin Stetson ventures into territory both familiar and strange....

Colin Stetson

Here still, is the dogmatically stripped down approach to performance and capture (all songs recorded live with no overdubs or loops) but there is an immediacy to the album that belies a more invasive and thorough miking of the various instruments being utilised  and a seeming influence drawn from the early nineties electronica of artists like Aphex Twin and Autechre, evident in the more pointed role played by the instruments\' many percussive elements.

There are ancestries, motivic and timbral, woven through these six songs that plainly anchor them within the shared universe of his Trilogy, though the overall experience is one of extreme intimacy, the sounds and imagery more tangible and immersive than previous offerings. The brief and brutal “In the clinches” recalls (or presages) echoes of songs like “Judges”, though now feeling like one has fallen down the bell of Stetson’s ancient bass saxophone itself. “Spindrift”, crystalline and serene, calls to mind the ambient works of Aphex Twin, while “Between Water and Wind” with it’s “Immigrant Song” swagger, relentlessly carves it’s way into the bedrock here, pavingthe way with an increasing focus on the minute and the minimal, with a deepened
sense of patience shared by most of the album’s six tracks.

Engineered and mixed by Stetson himself, this album represents a decidedly independent approach across the entire creative process and finds him at the top of his game, both as a composer and instrumentalist as well as a producer.

Vynehall’s DJ style is eclectic, considered and always surprising, and has been expertly reflected in his popular mixes for the likes of FACT and XLR8R, with the latter commenting that his contribution to their podcast series “quite possibly raised more questions than it answered”. His debut Radio 1 Essential Mix proved so popular that it went on to be shortlisted by the BBC as one of the 5 best Essential Mixes of 2016.Something of a media recluse, all we really know about Leon Vynehall is from his music – so far it’s proved a fascinating story.

All night long... To the rhythm

erol alkan flyer

Following a seven-hour, sell-out show in March at Village Underground, DJ, producer, remixer and Phantasy founder Erol Alkan returns to his native London nightlife for another all-night long edition of ‘To The Rhythm’.

As with all 'To The Rhythm' extended sets, Alkan continues to explore his record collection, taking in offbeat strains of house, disco, techno, electro and alternative music, bound and connected together with his unique, psychedelic sensibility.

This edition of ‘To The Rhythm’ will take place as one of the first major events at the much-anticipated EartH (Hackney Arts Centre), with Alkan once again controlling both the sound and lights within the venue, which will benefit from additional production for the evening.

'To The Rhythm' at Village Underground earlier this year was a major personal highlight, nothing really beats playing in my hometown of London. Pleased to be one of the first to play the brand new EartH (Hackney Arts Centre), we've got something special planned. See you there' - Erol Alkan

To London via Mali, the Ivory Coast and France...

Boldly experimental yet respectful of her roots, it’s a record that defines her as the voice of young African womanhood – proud of her heritage but with a vision that looks confidently to the future and a message that is universal.

Her spectacular 2011 debut album Fatou made the Malian singer and guitarist the most talked about new African artist on the planet. FENFO (which translates as “something to Say”’) dramatically fulfils that promise on a set of vivid and original new compositions that draw on the rich experiences she has enjoyed since.

“I’ve had so many different musical adventures since the last album, touring and working with so many other musicians and I think you can hear how all of that feeds into this record,” she says. “This is my time and I’m sharing my soul.”

Those she has worked with include some of the biggest names in contemporary music. She recorded with Bobby Womack and Herbie Hancock; played Glastonbury and other major festivals; and toured with the Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca. She assembled a West African super-group featuring Amadou and Mariam, Oumou Sangaré and Toumani Diabaté to record a song calling for peace in her troubled homeland; and climbed aboard Damon Albarn’s star-studded Africa Express, which culminated in her sharing a stage with Sir Paul McCartney.

Sunflower Bean

Blue, as Julia Cumming of Brooklyn’s Sunflower Bean points out, is something of a “loaded color.” The word is of course often synonymous with sadness—certainly blues music isn’t known for its laughs. But it's also the "emotional color" of the band's upcoming, sparkling second album, Twentytwo in Blue. “We definitely don’t want it to come across as a sad record,” explains Cumming. “Blue is kind of hopeful, and we wanted to explore that color with this record.” The new record by vocalist and bassist Cumming, drummer Jacob Faber and guitarist and vocalist Nick Kivlen is many things: rousing, romantic, topical, empathetic and insightful. But defeatist it’s not.

SB - 1600 x 1068.jpg

All three band members will in fact be 22 when Twentytwo in Blue is released in March of 2018, almost two years and two months after Sunflower Bean’s hazy, charming debut LP, Human Ceremony. They were two momentous years in which the trio toured the world several times over and grew in accomplishment, discovering a newly confident voice they bring to the second album, one that doesn’t shy away from the political changes and cultural shifts that have left America and the world stupefied. “This has been such an unbelievable time,” says Kivlen. “I can’t imagine any artist of our ilk making a record and not have it be seen through the lens of the political climate of 2016 and 2017."

Chicago X London: Makaya McCraven + Nubya Garcia + Guests

EFG London Jazz Festival

Presented by Serious, International Anthem, and Total Refreshment Centre

The EFG London Jazz Festival brings together a double headliner featuring two of the most seminal artists to emerge from the thriving jazz scenes in Chicago and London in recent years.

Drummer and beat scientist Makaya McCraven, one of the key new figures in the Chicago jazz scene, whose genre-bending compositions also draw from his collaborations with hip-hop, African dance, indie rock, and Hungarian folk artists. His performance will come on the back of the release of his latest album Universal Beings, which comes out later this year via International Anthem.

Saxophonist Nubya Garcia, undoubtedly one of the leading forces in the new wave of British afro-tinged jazz, having taken the world by storm this year with her When We Are EP and appearances at Dimensions, Field Day, Winter Jazzfest amongst other festivals.

This marks the two artists’ only headline shows in London this side of 2018, and they will also be joined by some very special guest artists TBA for a series of one-off collaborations after their own sets.

Following on from 2017’s Chicago X London weekender in Total Refreshment Centre, this year’s event takes the concept to the next level in the incredible new Hackney Arts Centre venue, and also serves to celebrate the physical release of Where We Come From  – the Chicago X London Mixtape featuring Makaya McCraven and a who’s who of London’s jazz scene on International Anthem.

We believe that 2018 will be looked back on as a year when a new generation of jazz artists like Makaya and Nubya crossed a threshold into becoming some of the most important musicians of their generation. Chicago X London brings them and more under one roof.

We look forward to sharing more details and announcements for this very special show in the coming months…

Matt Maltese

“Missing Leonard Cohen already? The good news is that he appears to have been reincarnated as a scrawny south London crooner called Matt Maltese” – The Guardian

Matt Maltese - 1600.jpg

Matt Maltese is a singer and writer of wry modern ballads, musically taking cues from a range of influences from Leonard Cohen, Jarvis Cocker, to Father John Misty and Angel Olsen. While lyrically the topics are just as heavy in tone as his idols, Matt adds a great crescendo to his quiet musings. “A charging colossus of feeling, summing up his frustrations, anger and contemplations about society as it is today”. Matt describes his songs as “having moments of sentimentality often covered by a wry social critique of the notions of love/politics… and I want to achieve that same balance”.

“Think Richard Hawley with a Twin Peaks filter, songs for early hour insomniacs and teens stumbling home from nights that etch into the conscience.” DIY

Pay attention to the journey, from New Brigade, a juvenile delinquent take on post-punk, full of cold, distant condemnation, and onto the ecstasy ofYou're Nothing, shedding the more aggressive hardcore influence and dragging in more light, a tendency followed on Plowing Into The Field Of Love. The intoxication is consistent, this has always been drunk music, but it's less a stumbling confusion and more a sturdy heartfelt confession with each record. They have finally caught up with their ambition. Their entire charm has always rested in their running ahead of themselves with blind confidence, taunting you to follow and you follow because wherever they are going is vital, is alive; on Beyondless they are treading with an assurance that is disarming, but there is no loss of charm, you are arm in arm now, whispering intimacies.
