“Missing Leonard Cohen already? The good news is that he appears to have been reincarnated as a scrawny south London crooner called Matt Maltese” – The Guardian
Matt Maltese is a singer and writer of wry modern ballads, musically taking cues from a range of influences from Leonard Cohen, Jarvis Cocker, to Father John Misty and Angel Olsen. While lyrically the topics are just as heavy in tone as his idols, Matt adds a great crescendo to his quiet musings. “A charging colossus of feeling, summing up his frustrations, anger and contemplations about society as it is today”. Matt describes his songs as “having moments of sentimentality often covered by a wry social critique of the notions of love/politics… and I want to achieve that same balance”.
“Think Richard Hawley with a Twin Peaks filter, songs for early hour insomniacs and teens stumbling home from nights that etch into the conscience.” DIY
