California-based band Deafheaven garnered acclaim for their signature hybrid sound of black metal, shoegaze, and post-rock. The band’s fifth studio album Infinite Granite arrived in 2021. A departure from their previous albums, Infinite Granite featured swirling guitars and clean vocals with influences like Radiohead, Ride, Tears For Fears, and Chet Baker. Across the album, the band showcases a different side of their artistry with startling vocal whispers and multi-part harmonies. Guitarists Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra expand their sonic palettes to include synth textures to enhance their sound. The band’s lofty arrangements are anchored by Christopher Johnson’s punchy bass lines and Daniel Tracy’s authoritative drum patterns. Ultimately, Infinite Granite is Deafheaven’s most goosebump-inducing album to date.
